Hidalgo ISD on Monday night announced the hiring of San Benito co-offensive coordinator Steve Marroquin as their athletic director/head football coach.

He replaces long-time Rio Grande Valley head coach Monty Stumbaugh, who resigned after six seasons in late March.

Marroquin has experience as a head coach as he spent four seasons leading PSJA from 2013-2016 posting a 16-25 record with his best season coming in 2014 when the Bears posted a 6-5 record and advanced to the playoffs.

He joined Dan Gomez’s staff at San Benito in 2018 as the co-offensive coordinator and the past five seasons as the Greyhounds co-offensive coordinator. San Benito’s offense has been among the top offenses in the Valley posting a 37-18 overall record with five playoff appearances in five years.

Hidalgo, who plays in 16-4A Division I, posted a 5-5 mark in 2022 and missed out on the playoffs.
