LEWISVILLE – Dave Campbell’s Texas Basketball and Chicken Express are proud to announce Lake Highlands junior guard Tre Johnson and Holliday senior forward Jalynn Bristow as the second annual Mr. and Miss Texas Basketball Players of the Year for the 2022-23 basketball season.

Mr. and Miss Texas Basketball, presented by Chicken Express, annually recognizes the most outstanding basketball players in the state of Texas. For 14 weeks, we took submissions for Mr. and Miss Texas Basketball Player of the Week before recognizing weekly winners based on fan vote. Player of the Year nominees were compiled by our staff with a two-week fan vote making up a portion of the final decision.

Johnson, a 6-foot-5 guard for Lake Highlands is considered by many to be the top overall prospect in the nation for the Class of 2024, but the Wildcats will forever remember him as being the man who guided the program to its first state title since 1968 averaging 22 points per game and 6.5 rebounds. Johnson scored 29 points and grabbed eight rebounds against two-time state champion Beaumont United in the boys 6A state final.

Bristow, a 6-foot-2 forward, guided Holliday to its first girls basketball state title this season after posting 25.8 points, 13.6 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 1.6 blocks per game and knocking off the top-ranked Fairfield Eagles in the girls 3A state championship where she scored 21 points and grabbed 14 boards.

An Iowa State signee, Bristow established herself as one of the most dominant players in the state after a breakout campaign for Wichita Falls Rider as a junior during the 2021-22 season.
