You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who speaks more highly of Arlington Seguin cornerback Jamel Johnson than his head coach.

“Jamel Johnson will be the No. 1 cornerback in the class of ‘23,” Arlington’s Seguin head coach Joe Gordon said.

Though only a sophomore, Johnson already has several big-time offers.

He’s one of several prospects for Seguin that hopes to lead the Cougars to new heights.

Johnson pumps his chest out to the competition with the mentality that he deserves to be left alone with receivers in man coverage, believing that he can win any ball thrown his way.

“JJ can flat out play; he is a playmaker, a hard worker, that is hungry to get better day in and day out,” Gordon said.

Johnson is a lockdown corner on one side of the ball, a return specialist on special teams, and a receiver for the Cougars that will bring explosive plays to an offense led by QB Xavier Gordon.

Gordon returned from season ending injury last season, and proved to be a stellar leader for the Cougars as they went on to be victorious in Week 1 in a 70-0 win over the Fort Worth Wyatt Chaparrals.

“Xavier Gordon is the heartbeat to our football team,” Joe Gordon said.

Having the senior quarterback return this season is great for the leadership aspect of this Arlington Sequin team.

“Family is something we pride our program on” Joe Gordon said.

When Gordon wasn’t able to play last season, it forced Xavion Price into the position where he was able to gain valuable experience. Price excelled, accounting for 20 touchdowns in 2019.

He’ll be a weapon outside for the Cougars this season.

“He’s special. Be looking out for the Xavier Gordon to Xavion Price Show,” Coach Gordon said. Stay tuned.

Coach Gordon is very excited on what is to come for the rest of the season.

“JJ (Jamel Johnson) has his island, but Xavion Brice has his own on the other side of the defense,” he said.

Brice is a pure athlete; someone that is willing to guard the best player on the opposing team’s offense.

“Smooth athlete, he’s your Deion Sanders,” Coach Gordon said. “He will outjump you. His ball skills are better than everyone else’s and also has the pull away speed. He has the lockdown mentality standing at every bit of 6-foot-3.”

Brice’s athletic abilities puts him in a league of his own. With the ability to play all over the field, Brice is attracting attention from colleges all over the country. After this season, it will be hard to count the offers if the season will mirror last weeks contest.

The cougars have plenty of firepower in the secondary with these two household names giving the coaches a lot of freedom with their play calls.

“I’m confident with these two guys that we can line up in any coverage and get the job done,” Coach Gordon said. “What makes these guys special is that they do not mind doing what the team needs from them to win; these guys line up wherever you put them and give maximum effort.”
