Legendary coach P.E. “Pete” Shotwell coached for 33 seasons from 1916-1952. His career high school coaching record was 262-90-18 and included 13 district titles and three state championships. His teams won titles at Abilene (1923), Breckenridge (1929 co-champs) and Longview (1937). While coaching at Breckenridge his teams compiled a 26-game winning streak. Shotwell was a founding member of the Texas High School Coaches Association in 1930 and served as its President in 1934-35. Shotwell also helped organize the first THSCA Coaching School in San Antonio in 1934. He was voted into that organization’s Hall of Honor in 1960. He was also inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1971. On May 19, 1966 Abilene’s Public Schools Stadium was renamed P.E. Shotwell Stadium.
