Akins rushed for 2,140 yards and 32 TDs, passed for 3,349 yards and another 28 scores, and kicked 20 field goals and 139 extra points at Gregory-Portland. It all added up to all-state, all-America, and Class 3A Player of the Year honors in 1971, plus college offers from all over. Marty continued his illustrious career at Texas, guiding the Longhorns to a 37-10 record and earning all-America honors at quarterback from the Football Writers of America in 1975, as well as Southwest Conference Player of the Year honors. Akins was also a track standout at both Gregory-Portland and Texas.
