Karl Don Milstead was called the most sought-after schoolboy lineman in Texas high school history when he graduated from Athens High in 1957. He was all-state as a junior and senior, leading the ballot for all players both years, and was named a prep all-American as a senior. His regular position was guard, but he also played tackle and fullback. Milstead went on to become a three-year starter at Oklahoma (1959-61), earning second-team all-Big 8 and honorable mention all-America as a sophomore.
