Texas High School Football Hall of Fame Inductees: Johnny Treadwell

Johnny Treadwell

Stephen F. Austin High School

Inducted in 2006

Dubbed "one of the best two-way football players in Texas schoolboy history" by the AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN, Treadwell was a force at both linebacker and guard for Stephen F. Austin High School in the late '50s. But it was not until his college days at Texas that he became a legend. With the top-ranked Longhorns trailing No. 7 Arkansas, 3-0, in 1962 at Memorial Stadium, the senior linebacker combined with teammate Pat Culpepper to smash Razorback runner Danny Brabham on Texas' 3-yard line, forcing a touchdown-saving fumble. Inspired by the turnaround, the Longhorns drove 90 yards for the winning touchdown. The play is known in UT lore as simply "The Tackle," and Treadwell went on to earn all-America honors. He was later voted to the school's all-time team.
