Inducted in 2015

Bob Wright’s lifelong ties to Mexia football began in 1930s, when his father began taking him to Blackcat games. His passion for the game grew during his time as 115-pound Mexia running before graduating in 1951. He later served an apprenticeship with Baylor Sports Information Director, Dub King, as a student at Baylor University in 1950s. After a stint in the U.S. Army, Wright took reporting jobs in Vernon and Port Arthur before returning to his hometown in March of 1959 as the sports editor of the Mexia Daily News. Wright has covered the Blackcats ever since. Wright became the editor of paper in 1967, but always reserved right to cover Blackcat football. Wright’s tenure has spanned three generations of coaches including Bob McQueen’s 1968 team that featured Rat Rhodes and finished 9-2-1 and Mexia’s 1989 state championship team. He was named the Putt Powell Sportswriter of Year in 2009 by the Texas High School Coaches Association. 2015 will mark his 57th season on the Blackcats’ beat. Bob and his wife Peggy recently celebrated their 55th anniversary.
