Smith led the Abilene Eagles to consecutive state championship games in the late 1920s. Smith scored a fourth-quarter touchdown in the 1927 final only to see Waco rally for a 21-14 victory. He was the captain of Abilene’s 1928 state championship team (12-0-1). The Eagles outscored their opponents 350-80 that season and had wins over the Daniel Baker College B Team and the Howard Payne freshmen. Smith rushed for 252 yards and scored three touchdowns on runs of 25, 5 and 2 yards in the Eagles' 38-0 win over Port Arthur in the title game -- one of the greatest performances in Texas high school football history.
