Alfred "Big Un'" Rose was a two-time all-state tackle and end for coach Floyd Betts. At 6-feet-2 and 190 pounds, he led Highland Park to back-to-back District 5-B titles and a three-year record of 25-4. After helping Highland Park post a 9-1 record and win the county championship in the school’s first year of football in 1923, Rose led the Scotties to their first playoff appearance in '24, a 20-0 win over Longview, before losing to eventual state champion Oak Cliff. He was selected to the All-Greater Dallas team in 1924 and '25. At Texas in 1929, Rose was named team MVP and was a consensus All-Southwest Conference pick. He went on to play professionally with the Providence Steamrollers (1930-31), Green Bay Packers (1932-36) and New York Yankees (1936).
