Grayson Rigdon, G Benjamin: Rigdon, who is the nation’s leading scorer at over 45 points per game, didn’t hit his average but did what he could in the Mustangs' 60-53 defeat to Jayton in the Class 1A title game. Rigdon poured in 32 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals on the day.
Rigdon is more than just an elite athlete playing 1A basketball. He’s got a great feel for the game, shoots the ball well, is a plus defender and an underrated passer.
Damien McDaniel, G Hitchcock: McDaniel, who is a UNLV football commit put Hitchcock on his back with 23 points, nine rebounds and four steals as the Bulldogs rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Ponder and win the 3A state title. McDaniel didn’t shoot the ball all that well, particularly in the first half, but his work rate and effort on defense combined with his craftiness to get to the rim and draw fouls made up for an off shooting night.
Dillon Battie, F Lancaster: Battie, a Temple commit put on a performance to remember in the Tigers blowout win over Killeen Ellison to win the Class 5A state title. Battie earned MVP honors with 17 points, 19 rebounds, 4 assists and three blocked shots. He scored in a number of ways and at 6-foot-8 was comfortable putting the ball on the floor and shooting from the outside.
Jared Harris, G Silsbee: The Memphis commit in his final high school game scored 21 points as an over-matched Silsbee squad fell to Faith Family 80-66 in the 4A title game. Harris’ length and uncanny ability to hang in the air and generate contact will make him a real factor at the next level.
Josiah Mosely, F Round Rock Stony Point: Mosely, considered the state’s top player and committed to Villanova, wrapped up his high school career with 18 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as the Tigers finished 38-2 with both losses coming to Plano East. Mosely, was a menace on the boards with elite bounce and finisher around the rim. Mosely did at times settle for mid-range jump shots, but when he’s got the switch flipped and has a scoring mindset, he’s nearly unstoppable.
