One of the more intriguing small school jobs in Central Texas is open after Marlin head coach Ruben Torres announced his resignation after three years leading the program.
Torres posted an impressive 29-12 record leading the Bulldogs to a 2A-Division I state semifinal appearance in 2021. He led the Bulldogs to a regional final appearance in 2023. Torres led Marlin to eight playoff wins, six more than the program combined to win from 2007-21.
Marlin posted an 11-3 record in 2023 and won 11 games in a row after an 0-2 start where the Bulldogs forfeited their season opener against Itasca as district administration made the decision to cancel athletics due to campus-wide academic goals not being met.
Torres is rumored to be joining the staff at Class 6A Garland Naaman Forest where he’ll link up with fellow El Paso native Jesse Perales, who is the current head coach of the Rangers.
In addition to his three seasons at Marlin, Torres spent four seasons as the head coach at El Paso Ysleta and two seasons as the head coach at El Paso El Dorado, with a career record of 64-41.
Expect Marlin ISD superintendent Dr. Daryl Henson and athletic director Jesse Bustamante to conduct a statewide search to fill the position as Marlin remained in Class 2A-Division I in the recent UIL Realignment.
