BREAKING: Houston-area administrator named new UIL athletic director

The University Interscholastic League has found its new head of athletics.

Cypress-Fairbanks ISD athletic director Rey Zepeda will become the new athletic director of the UIL, the league annouced on Thursday. Zepeda replaces Dr. Susan Elza, who left the organization in January to join Matt Rhule's staff at Nebraska.

Zepeda has been the head of Cy-Fair ISD since 2016, leading one of the state's largest school districts as it has swelled to 13 high schools. Prior to hisi time at Cy-Fair, Zepeda worked in the administration at Galena Park ISD, Mathis ISD, Houston ISD and Corpus Christi ISD. A graduate of Texas A&M and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff, Zepeda will be tasked with helping lead the UIL through a series of new challenges, including the potential addition of a Class 7A.

“It is a tremendous honor and privilege to be selected to be the next director of athletics for the University Interscholastic League,” Zepeda in a press release. “The UIL is the premier interscholastic student activities association in the United States. I cannot wait to join their team and partner with their tremendous staff to positively serve the student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrators of this great state. I also look forward to working with the many coaching and athletic administration associations across the state to serve their needs and to continue to make Texas the leader in public interscholastic athletics in the nation.”
