Midland Greenwood athletic director/head coach Rusty Purser has resigned his post after four seasons leading his alma mater, he tells Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

“With my son graduating, I wanted to do right by Greenwood and give them time to get the right guy in place, Purser said. "I don’t have another job right now but I’ve got a great relationship with my superintendent so I wanted to give them some time instead of dropping it on them in May."

Purser, a 1995 Greenwood graduate, led programs at Floydada, Borger, Taylor and Greenwood. He started coaching as an assistant at Greenwood and also spent time as an assistant at Alice and Midland Lee (now Legacy). He has a career record of 94-95 in 17 seasons as a head coach. 

Purser led Greenwood to the playoffs in all four of his seasons. In his first season at the helm at Greenwood, purser directed the Rangers to a 14-1 record and a trip to the state semifinals where they fell to eventual state champion Texarkana Pleasant Grove, 48-20, and to an area round playoff appearance in 2020. 

“It was a great honor to be back at my alma mater," he said. "The community and administration was so good to me and my family. You couldn’t write a better script being back home where my Dad coached and then me getting to coach my sons here, it was really special."
