After an unbelievable slate of games on Thursday there was some concern that both of the 4A title games on Friday would be lopsided. Both Carthage and Argyle delivered on that suspicion capping off dominating 2020 seasons with blowout wins.
The only question on the minds of fans and media alike was who would win a hypothetical matchup between Argyle and Carthage?
Carthage opened the final day of the small school state championships by adding another chapter to its incredible title legacy, capping off one of the most dominant seasons in the history of Texas High School Football with a 70-14 victory over Gilmer to win the Class 4A-Division II state title.
Scott Surratt’s Dawgs continue to cement their legacy as one of the state’s top dynasties as this win is the Bulldogs eighth state title in the last 14 years!
Surratt has an incredible 63-6 playoff record at Carthage.
The Bulldogs faced a bit of adversity in this one falling behind 14-0 before unleashing 70 straight points; the game was out of reach at halftime. The 2020 Bulldogs’ season may go down as the most dominating of the eight titles as Carthage played no game closer than 17 points all seasons and their closest playoff win was a 28-point win over Salado in the regional semifinals.
In the nightcap, Argyle put on a similar display of dominance in a lopsided 49-21 win over Lindale to earn their second state title in school history.
The Eagles took full advantage of a couple of Lindale miscues early and raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead behind four rushing touchdowns from running back Tito Byce, who capped off his high school career with a state title after seeing the past two seasons end with injuries.
Lindale, in their first state title game appearance, just made far too many mistakes to play with a team of Argyle’s caliber and the Eagles from East Texas never seriously challenged after falling so far behind early on.
The season is completed for the 4A, 3A and 2A high schools in the state of Texas and in spite of all the challenges that were ahead of us. Major thanks goes out to all the coaches, administrators, players and their families for doing their part to ensure the season was completed and the seniors got to finish their careers on the field as much as possible.
