Timpson defensive coordinator Patrick Gandy was promoted to athletic director and head coach on Tuesday. Gandy had been serving as Timpson’s interim athletic director since the retirement of Kerry Therwhanger in January.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of a new job,” Gandy said in a press release. “My dad was an AD and head football coach for 20+ years and it’s always been my goal to sit in that seat and build a program like he did.”

Gandy’s father, Wayne Gandy, served as head coach at Huffman-Hargrave, Groesbeck and Joaquin, retiring in 2014 with a career record of 123-101.

Gandy has spent all but one semester of his coaching career at Timpson. After graduating college in December 2011, Gandy coached softball during the spring of 2012 at Corrigan-Camden. That summer he accepted a position on staff at Timpson and Gandy has remained at Timpson ever since. In 2019, Gandy was promoted to defensive coordinator where he’s served for the past five years, which have been the best five seasons in school history, culminating in a 2A-Division I state title in 2023.

“Coach T (Therwhanger) has done a great job and has been a fantastic mentor for me over the years,” Gandy said. “He has done nothing but help me learn things that athletic directors have to deal with on a daily basis.”
