4A Division I
Stock Up
Dumas: The Demons moved up in the 4A-Division I state rankings this week with an emphatic 48-8 win over a good Seminole squad. Aaron Dunnam’s team looks to be in mid-season form after just one week.
Stock Down
Beeville Jones: The Trojans lost their first regular season game since 2018 as they were drilled on the road against Boerne, 42-13. Jones is very young and plays in a brutal 15-4A Division I. Chris Soza’s squad has a lot to clean up if they want to compete for a post-season spot this year.
4A Division II
Stock Up
Glen Rose: The Tigers, with just two starters returning on the offensive side of the ball, pulled off quite the stunner on Friday taking down Springtown, 27-13, to open the season with a bang. Glen Rose, who has won five playoff games the past two years in Division II, is no slouch. But beating a state ranked Division I squad is heady stuff.
Stock Down
Cuero: The Gobblers’ 2019 struggles weren’t an aberration as Cuero took one on the chin in a 55-21 loss to La Vernia to open the season. Jack Alvarez’s debut didn’t go as planned and even though we think Cuero will eventually take steps forward this season, there will be some growing pains early.
3A Division I
Stock Up
Orange Grove: The Bulldogs announced their presence in 3A-Division I with authority on Friday night as Mark Del Percio’s squad out-gunned a strong Sinton squad from Class 4A in a 56-44 win. OGHS is in a tough district with the likes of Vanderbilt Industrial, Edna and Aransas Pass. If the season opener is any indication, expect Orange Grove to be in that mix as well.
Stock Down
Bushland: The Falcons were expected to take a step back this year with a new head coach and a very young team. Facing the No. 1 team in the state is a tall order to open the year on top of that. However, Bushland was run out of the building from the start and was, for the most part, just not competitive with Brock in a 55-7 loss. The Falcons will improve, but the road back may be a little longer than we all anticipated.
3A Division II
Stock Up
Spearman: While most of the attention for Spearman is on 2022 recruit Brennan Thompson, the Lynx showed they are far more than a one-man show as they routed Class 2A panhandle powerhouse Stratford, 42-6. Spearman will have plenty of chances later in the year to prove themselves in a tough 3A-Division II district that includes Canadian, Childress and Friona.
Stock Down
Grand Saline: It wasn’t a great start for new head coach Joe Drennon at Grand Saline as the Indians were drilled 54-0 by a Cooper squad that posted a 3-7 mark a year ago. Cooper is much improved, but it appears Grand Saline has a lot of work to do after a tough season opener.
2A Division I
Stock Up
Groveton: The Indians moved into the DCTF state rankings this week as they opened the year with a strong 36-16 win over always tough Lovelady. The path in the Piney Woods is brutally tough in 2A-Division I, but Groveton has the potential to be a real threat to San Augustine’s run of dominance.
Stock Down
Mason: The Punchers played above their weight against a solid Comanche team from 3A-Division II, but the offense just was not good in a 14-0 loss on Friday. When Mason is vintage Mason, they handle even good teams from 3A-Division II with ease. The Punchers will still be good in 2020 but they don’t have that elite look at the moment.
2A Division II
Stock Up
Falls City: The Beavers, under new (and old) head coach Mark Kirchhfoff, have a lot of new faces and are expected to be a bit down in 2020, but no one sent Falls City the memo. FCHS opened 2020 with an impressive 41-20 victory over a solid Three Rivers squad that was 8-4 in 2A-Division I a year ago.
Stock Down
Bremond: The Tigers have long been a Central Texas power in 2A-Division II, but 2020 didn’t start out as planned as Jeff Kasowski’s bunch was upset by Normangee, 29-14, on Friday night. Bremond will definitely need to take steps forward if they want to go toe to toe in district play with three-time defending state champion Mart.
