Jonathan McGill, a 5-foot-9, 175-pound two-way prospect from Coppell (Texas) has been a four-year starter for the Cowboys, and he feels 2018 could be a special season.

"My time flew by here real fast, my senior year crept up on me, but this team is different," McGill explained. "We have player-led leadership as well as coaching leadership, so I feel like we have learned to finish games and had a real strong off-season. There is a tremendous opportunity here this year. It is just a great experience to be out here."

As a junior in 2017, McGill earned the District 9-6A Defensive Most Valuable Player award and was named to the 2017 Dave Campbell's Texas Football Super Team.

Playing mostly safety throughout his prep career, McGill is now starting at cornerback.

"Coach transitioned me there this off-season," McGill informed. "He told me that he was transitioning me to corner because we play teams like Hebron and Allen that have four and five-star receivers, so he told me he was putting me at corner so I could learn how to lock them down."

"It is different, but I am learning and progressing every rep and every down, so I am just going to try to be the top corner in the metroplex."

On the recruiting front, McGill has secured double-digit offers but reported that he is considering a top six list that includes: California, Stanford, Oklahoma State, SMU, Texas Tech, and Washington State.

Stanford was one McGill's first Power Five Conference offers, and the Cardinal have been a constant factor in his recruitment. He has taken multiple trips to the campus, most recently in July.

"I got to sit down and talk with coach (David) Shaw, the head coach," McGill said. "That was good. It was the first time that me and my family got to sit down and talk to him one-on-one and see what his plans were and stuff like that. It was a great trip, and I am looking forward to going back out there."

Stanford is definitely in the race to land McGill, but he noted a couple of in-state programs are also in the thick of it.

"Texas Tech is another school that has a good shot at me," McGill reported.  "Coach (David) Gibbs and the defensive staff talks to me a lot."

"I would also say that SMU has a good shot. TJ McDaniel is one of my best friends since way back, and he committed there."

"I feel like people around the metroplex are really starting to believe in their coaching staff," McGill said as he continued about SMU's involvement.  "They have a young coaching staff, and it is a great opportunity. They play their games in Dallas, and you could really help rebuild a dynasty like they had with the Pony Express."

McGill has not announced a decision date, but he has his first official visit in a few weeks to Big 12 country.

"I am taking an official visit to Oklahoma State on my bye week, and that is when they play Texas Tech," McGill said.

"When I went up to Oklahoma State it was really for a camp visit. I only got to see the football field and meeting rooms, so I did not really get to tour everything. I am also looking forward to getting up there and seeing Gabe Lemons, a guy that was at Coppell, me and him built a close friendship, so I am looking forward to that and seeing the town of Stillwater."
