Anna (1-0) at Aubrey (1-0): It’s an intriguing 4A battle in the northern part of the DFW area as Division I Anna visits Division II Aubrey. Anna made their way into the statewide top ten after taking down Decatur last week 54-35. Louisiana Tech commit, QB Evan Bullock in his first varsity start impressed throwing for 397 yards and five touchdowns, while Anna’s defense stepped up and forced three turnovers in the win. Aubrey trailed early 14-0 against Sunnyvale, but the Chaparrals rallied for a 28-24 win. Aubrey’s young offensive line struggled to open up running lanes consistently last week and they’ll need to find a way to move the football consistently and keep Anna’s dynamic offensive attack off the field. If they can do that, they’ll have a chance to pull the upset, but if Anna gets rolling, Aubrey lacks the firepower to keep up. Stepp’s Pick: Anna by 9

Kilgore (0-1) at Gilmer (1-0): Two teams feeling quite the opposite about their Week 1 results tangle in Upshur County on Friday night as Kilgore visits Gilmer. Kilgore is smarting from a lopsided 45-10 defeat at the hands of powerful Carthage, the Bulldogs offense struggled to string together drives against a young Carthage defense and the KHS defense had no answers for Carthage’s veteran offense. It was total domination from start to finish. Gilmer feasted on Tyler Chapel Hill’s seven turnovers as the Buckeyes rolled to a stunning 51-27 victory last week. Sophomore QB Cadon Tennison in his first varsity start tossed three touchdown passes and ran for another score, while WR/DB Rohan Fluellen picked off three passes and the Gilmer special teams returned a kickoff for a touchdown. This game is going to be close, Kilgore will secure the ball better than Chapel Hill did last week, but can KHS generate enough offense to keep pace with a Gilmer team that still is plenty dynamic on offense? I don’t believe Kilgore is there yet, so edge goes to Gilmer at home. Stepp’s Pick: Gilmer by 8

Brock (0-1) at Wichita Falls Hirschi (1-0): Brock continues their absolutely brutal non-district slate with a road test at Wichita Falls Hirschi. Last week the Eagles took on a Texarkana Pleasant Grove squad that could match them up front, while presenting a speed advantage and the Eagles fells 28-7. This week’s challenge against Hirschi is different because Brock should have an edge up front, but Hirschi’s speed on the outside is more lethal than Pleasant Grove’s. Brock’s defense held up in the first half leading 7-0, but Pleasant Grove simply wore BHS down in the final 24 minutes. Hirschi opened up the season Thursday night with an easy 48-7 win over Clint. WR Jamarion Carroll had three receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns, he also had a rushing touchdown and returned a kickoff for a touchdown as well for the Huskies. If Brock can keep Hirschi’s playmakers in front of them and limit big plays, the Eagles have a real good shot to pull the upset here, I think they’ll get the offense untracked this week and control the clock and limit Hirschi’s touches. Stepp’s Pick: Brock by 3

Navasota (1-0) at Madisonville (1-0): Two teams who opened up the season with impressive wins will look to start 2-0 on Friday night in Madisonville as Navasota comes to town. Navasota took down state ranked Navarro last week 41-14 as the Rattlers got the ground game rolling. Teta Scott ran for 223 yards and four touchdowns and Zy’Merick Taylor added 88 yards and two more touchdowns to lead NHS to the upset. Madisonville made a statement of their own last week as the Mustangs drilled 3A power Diboll 42-0. Texas Tech commit WR/KR Lorenzo Johnson had a monster night with five receptions for 138 yards with two touchdowns and he was a major factor in the return game. This one will come to the defenses, at least after one week we give the edge to Madisonville in what should be an exciting matchup between two schools not too far from each other. Stepp’s Pick: Madisonville by 4

Canadian (1-0) at Bushland (1-0): It’ll be a fun atmosphere in the Panhandle on Friday night as Canadian heads to Bushland looking to make a statement that they are still the best 3A program in the area. Canadian opened the season in impressive fashion with a 49-14 win over Seminole, OK. WR Preston Miller hauled in nine passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wildcats. Bushland spoiled the debut of Canyon West Plains last week as the Falcons rolled to an easy 52-6 win. QB Dawson Jaco threw for 183 yards and two touchdowns and he added a touchdown on the ground as well as Bushland raced out to a 42-6 halftime lead and put it on cruise control the rest of the game. Canadian’s experience and firepower on both sides of the ball will be the key in this one, Wildcats pull away in the second half. Stepp’s Pick: Canadian by 11

Lorena (0-1) at West (1-0): Another strong matchup in the Super CenTex at the small school level takes place this week as Lorena will look to bounce back against always tough West. Lorena dug themselves an early hole against China Spring and the deficit was too much to overcome in a 38-20 loss. Lorena’s offense is going to need to be more consistent this week because West is more than capable of pulling the upset. West handled 4A Godley 42-20 last week, but the Trojans will have their hands full in this one, especially trying to handle Lorena WR and Baylor commit Jadon Porter. Stepp’s Pick: Lorena by 11

Cisco (1-0) at Wall (1-0): It’s a Big Country vs Concho Valley showdown in Wall as Cisco heads south looking to get to 2-0 against a vastly improved Wall squad. QB Hunter Long rushed for 138 yards and three scores and passed for 75 more and another touchdown to lead a Cisco offense that rolled up 464 total yards. Wall made quite the statement on Friday night tallying 674 yards of offense in a 49-20 win. Garrett Guy led a Wall ground attack that totaled 533 yards as he ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns. Both defenses will be keyed up to slow the run down, this will come down to which offense can win on first down and hit big passing plays in key moments. Cisco has gotten the better of Wall the past two years, so the lean is to Loboes in this showdown, but it’ll be close. Stepp’s Pick: Cisco by 7

Cedar Hill TLC (1-0) at Gunter (0-0): Cedar Hill TLC made their UIL debut last week in impressive fashion with a dominant 43-12 win over Class 4A Gainesville. The Tigers got a big effort from RB Corey Turner who had two long touchdown runs and a stellar effort in the secondary, while Tayden Gray ran for three scores. They’ll have a chance to make quite the statement this week going against a Gunter squad that is widely considered the favorite to win a state title. Gunter had their Week 1 game canceled so the Tigers had the week off, there could be some early sloppiness from Gunter that Cedar Hill TLC wont have, but as long as GHS limits big plays, they’ll wear TLC down in the second half and pull away. Stepp’s Pick: Gunter by 17
