Texas Tech shook off some rust and dominated down the stretch to win 48-16 on homecoming against Kansas at Jones AT&T Stadium.
Quarterback Alan Bowman dominated in his first game back after a lung injury. The true freshman from Grapevine completed 36 of his 46 pass attempts for 408 yards, three touchdowns and one interception against a conference opponent.
Here are three quick takeaways from the Red Raiders’ victory.
Rust showing
Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman hasn’t played since Sept. 30 against West Virginia after suffering a partially collapsed lung against the Mountaineers. He looked good in his first game back, but still got off to a slow start.
The Red Raiders were tied 3-3 with the Jayhawks after one quarter. However, Tech turned on the jets in the second quarter. The Red Raiders scored 21 points, including a pair of rushing scores. From that point on, it never got close. This was the kind of warmup that Bowman needed before playing tougher opponents.
Big time players
Texas Tech finally had a healthy T.J. Vasher, and it showed. Both Vasher and new top receiver Antoine Wesley showed just how devastating a big, fast receiver can be.
Wesley caught nine passes for 155 yards and a touchdown in the win. Vasher added five catches for 79 yards and a touchdown. Having both of these two healthy and in the lineup makes the Tech offense almost unguardable.
Ta’Zhawn Henry and DaMarcus Felton also combined for 98 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. The balanced offense will only continue to improve.
Defensive standouts
The good Texas Tech defense showed up on Saturday against the Jayhawks. The Red Raiders gave up just 308 yards against the Jayhawks. Eighty-eight of them came on the final drive of the game, when the Red Raider backups were already in the game.
Kansas doesn’t have the strongest offense in the conference, but that made it more important for Tech to come out and shut down the unit. Kansas only hit a couple of big plays that boosted its final numbers. Otherwise, this was a tremendously dominant performance, and the kind Kliff Kingsbury wants to see. It was a good tune-up for next week, when the Red Raiders face off against Iowa State.
