UIL REALIGNMENT: Most Intriguing 5A DI Storylines to Watch
Presented by:
An Extra District in DFW: DFW held five districts at the 5A-Division I level (District 3-7) during the last realignment. With several 6A schools dropping to 5A-Division I (DeSoto, Cedar Hill, Lancaster, Mesquite, Mansfield Legacy and Garland Naaman Forest, along with Division II move-ups Melissa, Mansfield Summit and Crandall), DFW may actually pick up an extra district and add District 8 to the mix.
Clutter in the Houston Area: Greater Houston only had three districts in the last realignment and they may only get three districts for the next two years as well. If you count Lufkin, Port Arthur Memorial and the two Beaumont ISD schools, Houston has 27 schools playing 5A-Division I. That looks like three nine-team districts to me.
The Corpus Trio: The Corpus Christi area had just two 5A-Division I programs in Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff the last realignment. Those two went south into the Valley for district play. Corpus Christi Carroll is being added to the party this year, but three isn’t enough for a district and the closest school to the area in 5A-Division I - Victoria East - is also on an island. My money is on Vets, Flour Bluff and Carroll going back south, with Victoria East going back to San Antonio, but its not out of the realm of possibility to send all four schools on the coast to San Antonio.
