When Aeryn Hampton first committed to Texas in the Spring 2022, he saw himself as a dynamic receiver in Steve Sarkisian’s high-powered offense. On Friday, the Daingerfield athlete announced his plans to rejoin the Longhorns’ 2024 class after a 7-month hiatus spent seriously considering Alabama.
The plan once again is to don the burnt orange, but the Longhorns won Hampton back by re-orienting their recruiting pitch for him to play nickel back on defense.
Hampton has racked up 99 receptions for 2,190 yards and 25 touchdowns in the past two seasons for a Daingerfield team that made it at least three rounds deep in the playoffs. He is the No.50-ranked recruit in the 2024 DCTF Top 100, however, because he’s also a ball-hawking defensive back.
While Hampton says he may still get some snaps on offense at Texas, safeties coach Blake Gideon has recruited the 5-foot-10-inch, 175-pound prospect as a nickel back in defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s 4-2-5 scheme. That’s ultimately what pushed Texas ahead of Alabama, according to DCTF recruiting director Greg Powers.
“As his recruitment progressed, Hampton became much more interested in playing in the secondary. He sees a clear path to the NFL on the defensive side of the ball and UT did a good job of making him see his relevance within their defensive scheme and highlighting a pathway to the league, whereas Alabama was recruiting him to play offense.” - Greg Powers
Hampton is the latest domino in a scorching recruiting stretch for the Longhorns that’s seen 11 players commit since mid-June. He’s the third four-star secondary player to commit to Texas along with Jordon Johnson-Rubell from IMG Academy and Santana Wilson from Desert Mountain High School in Arizona.
