Dalton and Doug Brooks strong-armed their way through AT&T Stadium with five touchdowns for a 47-12 win over Hawley in the Class 2A Division I State Championship on Wednesday.

This marks Shiner’s fourth state championship.

Shiner outgained Hawley in yards 529 to 164.

Despite fumbling two runs to the rugged defensive play by the Hawley defense in the first half, Shiner (16-0) was able to power through thanks to the rumbling play of the Brooks brothers. They combined for 227 yards and accounted for all three of Shiner’s touchdowns in the first half. They finished with 404 yards and five touchdowns, with Dalton having three.

The Brooks brothers weren’t the only ones making plays as QB Drew Wenske helped balance the attack completing 6 of 7 passing for 110 yards and a touchdown. WR Tyler Bishop also secured a touchdown in the fourth quarter finishing with 36 yards. Maklyn Burchell scored late as well.

Hawley (15-1) had success early in the game with their passing attack. RB Diontay Ramon had a great 49-yard run to tie things in the first quarter. QB Rodney Hooper was able to finish with 123 yards and a touchdown as he tried to keep tempo for his team. His wide receivers made it easy for him as Aeneas Segura and Will Scott beat their men in 1-on-1 coverage to move the chains for the Bearcats. Segura had an impressive catch over a defender to set up Scott for an endzone corner grab for his first ever touchdown in the second quarter.

But three interceptions by Comanche DB Ryan Peterson, Dalton Brooks and DB Eli Fric made it a no-fly zone for Hawley. DL Beck Bishop finished as the leading tackler for the Comanches with nine (five total). Fric came in second with five total tackles. DL Kennan Hailey put the pressure on with a seven-yard sack.

The Hawley defense did its best to slow down the power of the Brooks’ running attack. DL Kason O’Shields lead the way with seven solo tackles and an interception late in the third.  Scott also denied Doug Brooks a touchdown run, dragging him down near the 10-yard line.
