Sherman ISD announced the hiring of Lamesa head coach Efrain Ramos as the next head football coach at Sherman High School on Monday. Ramos steps in for Josh Aleman, who was reassigned from his post in mid-March.

Ramos has spent the past two seasons back in his native West Texas leading Lamesa’s football program. In 2024 he led the Golden Tornadoes to their first district title in 23 years and followed that up by leading Lamesa back to the playoffs in 2025.

Despite being a West Texas native, Ramos has plenty of familiarity with the area having spent three seasons just down the road as the defensive coordinator at Anna where he was the defensive coordinator for the Coyotes 2023 4A-Division I state title squad.

“I was very familiar with the area, being just down the road in Anna," Ramos said. "I know Sherman has good athletes and kids that get after it. They’ve been in really tough districts so they are battle tested. My son enjoyed being in the area, it’s a good part of the state for us. We’ve got a great opportunity to build some momentum and it’s an opportunity to coach a high-level brand of football and for me to grow as a coach."

Ramos has also spent time as an assistant coach at Lubbock Coronado and Amarillo Caprock. He’s a native of Plainview and was a high school teammate of current Anna head coach Seth Parr.

In addition to hiring a new head coach, Sherman will also be adding Ramos’ son Daniel Ramos, who has started the past two seasons at quarterback at Lamesa and enters his junior season in 2026 primed to make an impact with the Bearcats.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity here in Lamesa," he said. "I waited a long time to get this opportunity and the buy in from the kids and community was tremendous from Day 1. I think Lamesa is ready to turn the corner. There’s a great group of kids coming and I am excited to see what happens here going forward."

Sherman was moved into Region I in February during UIL Realignment where it will compete with state powerhouse Denton Ryan in 3-5A Division I, but the remainder of the district behind Ryan looks to be wide open.

Lamesa, who returns about half of their starters will look to remain in contention in a new District 2-3A Division I where they primarily head east into the Abilene area for district play.
