SMU defensive coordinator Scott Symons is expected to become the next inside linebackers coach for the Dallas Cowboys, sources confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. Symons, a Hurst native, was hired as the DC at SMU in December of 2021 after spending three seasons as the DC at Liberty. He was a Broyles Award semi-finalist in 2024 and a 2022 member of the DCTF 40 Under 40 List.
SMU’s rise from solid G5 program to contending in the ACC coincided with the defensive improvement enjoyed by the Mustangs under Symons’ leadership. The unit ranked 119th in scoring in 2022, his first season in charge. The group improved to 11th in the nation in 2023 while winning the American and was inside the Top 35 in 2024 and 2025 as members of the ACC.
SMU lost offensive coordinator Casey Woods earlier in the offseason when he took the head coaching job at Missouri State. Head coach Rhett Lashlee calls the plays on offense so that loss didn’t cause a huge shake up on the staff. The loss of Symons could become a much bigger deal for the Ponies if Lashlee doesn’t hit on his replacement.
