Spend a few seconds watching Julian Caldwell's highlights and you'll understand why the 6-foot-2 Argyle junior is such a hot commodity around the country.
The precision with which he runs his routes. His ability to make catches in traffic. His YAC.
Those traits, amongst others, were reason enough for over 40 schools — including Texas, Texas Tech, Oregon, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, SMU, Tennessee — to extend offers.
Are any standing out to him at this point?
"I’d definitely say Oregon, Texas, and Texas Tech," Caldwell said. "They’ve been recruiting me really hard, and they’re definitely schools I’m considering. I have really good relationships with the coaches and staff, and I think I could be a great fit in their programs. Those are the top schools I’ve been looking at right now."
Caldwell feels so good about those schools that he's locked in official visits with them already. He'll be at Tech the first weekend in June, Texas the following weekend and then Oregon the weekend after that.
"Honestly, you only get this experience once," Caldwell said. "I’ve always said ideally I want to commit after official visits. I’ll take some spring ball visits, then OVs, and I plan on committing after that."
Taking those visits in order, Caldwell has been excited to see what Joey McGuire is building in Lubbock.
"They’ve always been a great program, but they’re definitely trending right now in recruiting," he said. "I think in the next couple of years they’ll be a powerhouse with how they’re doing things. I really love their coaching staff, and I think I could get on the field early, which is big. I also really like the culture — it kind of gives an Argyle feel. Small town, football community. I really like what’s going on there."
As for Texas, Caldwell was down in Austin for Texas' Junior Day where the vibes were immaculate.
"It was great vibes all around," Caldwell said. "I got to see more of the campus, the training facilities, weight room, stuff like that. We also had a more intimate conversation with Coach Sark, which is something we’ve been looking for — just continuing to build that relationship. It definitely put more confidence in me as a player, knowing they’re going to take care of me and my parents, develop me, and help me reach my goals."
Oregon secured Caldwell's third OV in large part because of the effort the Ducks have put into recruiting him.
"They’ve put in a lot of effort recruiting me, and we’ve shown a lot of love back — we’ve been out there about five times now," he said. "One thing about Oregon is I think they could really bring the best out of me as a player, development-wise and everything. Even though it’s far from home, I think it would be a good lesson for me, teaching me how to be a grown adult. There are a lot of pros for Oregon right now."
There are a lot of pros to being an Argyle Eagle too, including going 25-4 the past two seasons. Caldwell said it all starts with his head coach, Todd Rodgers.
"Argyle has a great program with a deep history of winning games," Caldwell said. "Coach Rodgers does a great job developing us and getting us ready to play against tough competition. One thing we talk about a lot is this is our DNA — do not accept anything other than your best. He definitely sets the bar high and makes everyone better."
