How TXHSFB Teams Have Fared Since Moving Up a Classification in 2024

Overall Trends:

When averaging the records of teams that jumped a classification together, every group experienced a lower winning percentage in the higher classification than in the smaller classification.

The schools that had the smoothest transition were those that jumped from 4A to 5A. From 2022-23 in 4A, they combined for a 101-66 (.605) record. From 2024-25 in 5A, they combined for a 75-69 (.521) record.

The schools that had the roughest transition were those that jumped from 1A six-man football to 2A 11-man football. From 2022-23 in 1A, they combined for a 15-19 (.441) record. From 2024-25 in 2A, they combined for a 5-31 (.139) record.

5A to 6A

Overall Record from 2022-23 in 5A: 231-156 (.597)
Overall Record from 2024-25 in 6A: 166-168 (.497)
Smoothest Transition: Medina Valley
Toughest Transition: Killeen

Baytown Goose Creek Memorial
2022-23: 2-18
2024-25: 4-14

New head coach JayMond Cleveland led the Patriots to their first 3-0 start in school history this season. While Goose Creek Memorial lost four straight in the vaunted District 23-6A, a win over Channelview has them at 4-4. Goose Creek Memorial has won more than four games only once since 2013, when it went 6-4 in 2020.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial
2022-23: 22-6
2024-25: 15-6

After back-to-back double-digit win seasons, including a run to the state semifinals in 2023, the Chargers have only lost a little electricity in 6A. Brownsville Veterans Memorial is 7-2 this season, but four of those wins came in non-district play against 5A and private schools. They are 1-2 in District 32-6A play.

Forney
2022-23: 19-6
2024-25: 10-8

The Jackrabbits reached the state semifinals as a 5A program in 2023 and fell to 4-6 in its first year as a 6A team. Forney has rebounded to a 6-2 record this season behind Notre Dame running back commit Javian Osborne. They are in the thick of a District 10-6A championship race that DCTX named the most exciting in 6A.

Fulshear
2022-23: 22-3
2024-25: 18-4

Fulshear didn’t skip a beat in the jump from 5A to 6A, actually improving its win total from 11 to 12. The Chargers stumbled to an 0-2 start this season in the transition from head coach Nick Codutti to Stephen Hill, but Hill’s squad has gone 6-1 since.

Houston Wisdom
2022-23: 9-11
2024-25: 7-12

Wisdom went 7-3 but missed the playoffs in 2023, then got bumped to 6A. Second-year head coach Jamarkus Branch secured the program’s first playoff appearance since 1979 with a 45-28 win over Houston Westside this past week.

Justin Northwest
2022-23: 16-8
2024-25: 8-11

A strong senior class powered Justin Northwest to a playoff appearance in its first year in 6A. But a young group has stumbled to a 2-6 record in a grueling District 4-6A, which includes Southlake Carroll, Byron Nelson and Euless Trinity.

Killeen
2022-23: 9-11
2024-25: 0-19

In 2023, Killeen secured its first winning season since 2012 with a 6-4 record. But the Kangaroos have hit hard times in the jump to 6A with a 19-game losing streak. Killeen’s 2,286 enrollment figure in the 2025 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine was the lowest in District 12-6A.

Killeen Shoemaker
2022-23: 15-7
2024-25: 13-7

Ever since suffering a 0-20 slump from 2016-17, head coach Toby Foreman has led Shoemaker to five winning seasons in seven years. That consistency has come despite a jump from 5A to 6A in the last realignment. Shoemaker is 7-2 this season and in a fight for a playoff spot in a tight District 12-6A.

Lancaster
2022-23: 17-8
2024-25: 9-11

Coach Leon Paul led a miraculous turnaround in 2023, going four rounds deep in the playoffs after a 1-4 start. Lancaster has held its own in one of 6A’s toughest districts, 11-6A, reaching the area round in 2024 and posting a 3-2 district record this season.

Longview
2022-23: 25-3
2024-25: 17-6

Longview has gone 9-1 in District 10-6A play since jumping from 5A to 6A. The Lobos were last a 6A program from 2016-19, when they won a state championship in 2018. Longview has lost three games this year by a combined 10 points while playing through legendary head coach John King’s mouth cancer diagnosis.

Magnolia
2022-23: 12-10
2024-25: 12-6

Magnolia had established itself as a perennial top-20 team in 5A, and after a 5-5 mark during the 6A learning curve last year, the Bulldogs are 7-1, with the one loss coming by three points to 8-1 Klein Collins.

Magnolia West
2022-23: 15-9
2024-25: 3-15

Magnolia West had just one losing season from 2010 to 2023, but the Mustangs have lost steam in 6A. Magnolia West is 1-13 in District 15-6A over the last two years.

Manvel
2022-23: 13-9
2024-25: 11-9

Kirk Martin, who started the program in 2008 and led the Mavericks to two state championship appearances, returned in 2023. His record in his first stint from 2008-17 was 108-25. His record in his second go-round is 16-14.

Medina Valley
2022-23: 10-12
2024-25: 12-8

After three consecutive 5-6 seasons, Medina Valley has already matched its highest win total since 2018 with a 7-2 record this year. The Panthers have had only one double-digit win season since 1996, an 11-2 mark in 2009 as a Class 4A school.

New Braunfels Canyon
2022-23: 15-6
2024-25: 13-8

In 2024, first-year head coach Sean McAuliffe took the Cougars to the third round of the playoffs, the deepest run since 2020, despite a jump up to 6A. The last time Canyon was a 6A team, it went 0-10 in 2019.

Princeton
2022-23: 2-18
2024-25: 7-11

Sitting at 5-3 this season, Princeton has already matched its highest win total since 2017. Much of that success is a credit to the passing duo of QB Marcus Flowers (2,305 yards, 17 TD) and WR Jordan Mosley (937 yards, 12 TD).

Richmond Foster
2022-23: 8-11
2024-25: 7-13

The Falcons went 1-9 in their last season as a 5A DI squad and made the playoffs at 4-7 in their first season in 6A. Richmond Foster is in the playoff hunt this season with a 3-2 district record.

Smoothest Transition: Alvin Iowa Colony
Toughest Transition: Alice

Alice
2022-23: 18-6
2024-25: 9-12

Alice was bumped from 4A to 5A after a 10-3 season in 2023 and didn’t skip a beat in 2024, going undefeated in District 15-5A DII play and winning the district crown. This season’s 1-8 skid has been a different story. The Coyotes have scored more than 20 points in a game just twice.

Alvin Iowa Colony
2022-23: 14-8
2024-25: 19-3

Iowa Colony opened in 2022 and went 2-7 while playing without upperclassmen. The following year, the Pioneers went 12-1 without seniors. Since moving to 5A with a full roster, Iowa Colony is 19-3. All losses have come to District 9-5A DII rival Richmond Randle.

Anna
2022-23: 28-2
2024-25: 15-6

The Coyotes won their first state championship in school history in their last year as a 4A ball club. Since jumping up to 5A, Anna has reached the regional semifinals and is hunting for a playoff spot once again in the ultra-competitive District 4-5ADII.

Boerne
2022-23: 25-3
2024-25: 18-5

Boerne made it to the first state championship game in program history in 2022, then experienced an 11-win season in its first year as a 5A program. Former defensive coordinator turned head coach Brett Sawyer has the Greyhounds at 7-1 this season despite losing head coach Che Hendrix and his son, star quarterback Hank, in the offseason.

Jacksonville
2022-23: 3-17
2024-25: 1-18

This former East Texas gem has hit a rough patch recently. First-year head coach Monty Stevenson’s ball club is allowing 50.6 points per game and scoring just 10.4 in District 7-5A DII play.

Kaufman
2022-23: 11-12
2024-25: 9-11

Kaufman moved back to 5A for the first time since 2019 and went 7-5 with star wide receiver Aljour Miles (SMU commit). The Lions have limped to a 2-6 record this year and are winless in District 6-5A DII play.

Splendora
2022-23: 2-18
2024-25: 4-14

Back in 5A for the first time since 2016-17, Splendora has four wins against two teams (Cleveland and Liberty) in the last two years.

3A to 4A

Overall Record from 2022-23 in 3A: 67-72 (.482)
Overall Record from 2024-25 in 4A: 41-71 (.366)
Smoothest Transition: Brock
Toughest Transition: Lorena

Bonham
2022-23: 3-17
2024-25: 1-17

Back in 4A for the first time since 2017, the Purple Warriors have not won a District 5-4A DII game yet. Bonham has had one winning season since 2005.

Brock
2022-23: 22-9
2024-25: 21-1

Brock has not won fewer than 10 games in a season since 2013 and experienced no drop-off with a move to 4A. Despite returning just seven starters, the Eagles are 8-0 with the closest contest coming in Week 1, a 52-31 win over Decatur.

Cleveland Tarkington
2022-23: 9-11
2024-25: 1-17

4A ball has not been kind to Cleveland Tarkington thus far. After 4-6 and 5-5 showings in their final 3A years, the Longhorns haven’t won a District 9-4A DII game.

Kemp
2022-23: 4-16
2024-25: 3-15

Kemp made the state semifinals as a 3A program in 2017. After an 8-3 showing the following year, the Yellowjackets haven’t had a winning season since.

Lorena
2022-23: 18-7
2024-25: 5-13

Lorena won the 2021 3A DI State Championship in legendary head coach Ray Biles’ second-to-last season. Coach Kevin Johnson piloted the program to an 11-3 season in its last year as a 3A team. A young roster combined with a jump to 4A has resulted in a 5-13 skid.

Shepherd
2022-23: 11-12
2024-25: 10-8

The Pirates have banded together for a 7-1 record despite losing the school’s all-time leading rusher and coming off a 3-7 start in 4A. Shepherd’s ground-and-pound attack has racked up 2,566 yards this season.

2A to 3A

Overall Record from 2022-23 in 2A: 54-36 (.600)

Toughest Transition: Anthony

Anthony
2022-23: 7-13
2024-25: 3-16

Anthony has had one winning season since 2007. The Wildcats’ two wins this year have come against 2A DII Van Horn and Cobre High School in New Mexico.

Stockdale
2022-23: 12-8
2024-25: 12-7

Shawn Alvarez took over head coaching duties as Stockdale made the leap to 3A and led the team to the playoffs. The Brahmas are back on track in 2025 with a 6-2 overall record.

Thrall
2022-23: 9-12
2024-25: 8-12

The Tigers’ push for a third consecutive playoff berth seems to be falling short with a 2-7 overall record and a 0-3 record in District 13-3A DII.

Tolar
2022-23: 26-3
2024-25: 14-7

Tolar made the first state championship in program history in 2023, the last as a 2A school. The winningest senior class in program history earned an 11-2 record in the first year at 3A, but a rebuilding year has resulted in a 3-5 start. The Rattlers are still in the hunt for a playoff spot from District 5-3A DII.

1A to 2A

Roughest Transition: McDade

McDade

2024-25: 1-17

McDade was placed in a grueling eight-team District 13-2A DII in its first 11-man football action in school history.

Van Horn
2022-23: 9-10
2024-25: 4-14

Van Horn played 11-man football from 1950 to 2019. Coach Brock Tyrell’s squad has just one senior and is currently 2-6.
