Rio Hondo (7-0, 4-0) at Raymondville (7-0, 4-0):
The biggest game in the Rio Grande Valley this week isn’t at the 6A or 5A level, it’s down in 3A-Division I as Rio Hondo visits Raymondville in a battle of unbeaten teams.
Rio Hondo blasted Lyford last week, 59-13. Big plays on the offensive side of the ball powered RHHS as RB Mario Lopez ran for four touchdowns. The Bobcats’ junior signal-caller Matthew Lopez threw three touchdown passes, two were to sophomore WR Sebastian Gonzalez.
The excitement is evident in Raymondville under first-year head coach Will Littleton as the Bearcats are 7-0 for the first time since 1988. Most of the season Raymondville’s offense has been led by RB Traeshaun Washington and he was solid in their 37-27 win over San Diego a week ago, but it was the supporting cast that played well. QB Jeffrey Lefevre had 186 yards passing and two scores and WR Diego Villegas had 123 receiving yards for two scores and he added 72 yards on the ground.
I expect a shootout in this one. Both offensive units are dynamic, but Rio Hondo’s balance across the board gives them the edge.
