Klein (4-0, 2-0) vs Klein Collins (4-0, 2-0):
The game of the year in Klein ISD is this week as the district’s two unbeaten teams with strong resumes will clash with first place on the line in 15-6A.
Klein Collins’ Week 2 demolition of Willis looks much better after Willis’ upset of The Woodlands last week. Collins had to wait until Saturday night for their matchup with Magnolia West, but the Tigers didn’t show any signs of slowing down with a 42-0 win.
QB Braydon Schoggin had a touchdown run and a touchdown pass to lead the Tigers offense, but it was the defense that was the story, pitching a shutout, picking off three passes, and special teams chipped in with a blocked punt.
Klein’s offense has been unstoppable early in the year under new head coach Nick Codutti as KHS averages nearly 63 points per game. The Bearkats earned a bizarre 44-20 win last week over Klein Forest in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicated. The Bearkats got up 44-6 early in the second quarter before a running clock was instituted by mutual agreement.
Klein recovered five straight onside kicks to run out to the huge lead in the first half.
Behind a massive offensive line, KHS is able to run the ball at will with RB Edward Kelly, an SMU commit, and multiple versatile options on the outside led by Turbo Jordan and QB Grant Stratta. Klein plays an unconventional style; they rarely punt, they go for two point conversions after every touchdown and they’ll onside kick the majority of the time. It’s a high-risk, high-reward strategy that makes Klein a team that’s very tough to prepare for and that’s not even taking into account their unique offensive scheme.
Collins is by far the best team Klein has played this year, but this Klein team looks like a real problem.
