Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko found his man at defensive coordinator, sources tell Dave Campbell's. The Aggies plan to hire Jay Bateman (50) to the DC role. He was the inside linebackers coach at Florida in 2022 and 2023. Before that, Bateman was the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at North Carolina. He was the defensive coordinator at Army from 2014 through 2018.
Bateman is a Virginia native who played linebacker at Randolph-Macon during his college days. His first full-time coaching job came in 1999 as the defensive coordinator at Siena. He worked his way into the FBS ranks after stops at Richmond, Lehigh, and Elon. Bateman was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2018 when his Army defense was ranked eighth in the country.
Elko is a defensive-minded head coach who served as defensive coordinator at Texas A&M before taking the head coaching job at Duke ahead of the 2021 season. The combination of Elko and Bateman should run the Wrecking Crew. Collin Klein was hired as offensive coordinator.
