Franklin (12-1) vs. Lorena (11-2), 7 p.m. Friday at Georgetown’s Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex: There’s no question that after three rounds of the playoffs the power in Class 3A-Division I lies in District 11-3A Division I as Lorena and Franklin meet for the second time this year with a spot in the state semifinals on the line.
Franklin took care of the third-place team in 11-3A Division I, Little River-Academy, last week, 52-27, as the Lions rolled up 402 yards on the ground. RB Jayden Jackson ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way.
The Lions jumped to a 21-0 lead and never looked back as Devyn Hidrogo had a touchdown on the ground and a receiving touchdown as the Lions won their 15th straight playoff game.
Lorena, who has won nine straight games, ended Franklin’s long winning streak with a last second field goal in a 52-49 win on October 20. The Leopards dominated the state’s No. 1 team Columbus last week, 42-21.
RB Braylon Henry continued his tear through Class 3A with 204 yards on the ground and five rushing touchdowns; it was Henry’s fourth game in the past five where he’s had at least five touchdowns.
Lorena’s defense simply locked down after falling behind 14-0 to one of the state’s top offenses.
On paper, these two teams are about as evenly matched as it gets. They say it is hard to beat a good team twice, so I’m giving the very slight lean this time to Franklin in the rematch.
Stepp’s Pick: Franklin by 2
