Malakoff (1-0) at Grandview (1-0): It’s the showdown that yearly (and sometimes twice a year) gives us outstanding football at the 3A-Division I level as Malakoff visits Grandview.

Both teams come into this one fresh off impressive Week 1 performances, with none being better than Grandview, which blasted state ranked 4A-Division II Glen Rose, 35-7. WR Carter Collins stole the show for the Zebras with 144 receiving yards and a touchdown, while picking off three passes.

Malakoff was impressive as well as the Tigers ripped West Rusk, 56-14. It was a balanced effort from MHS as they returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. QB Mike Jones threw for 119 yards and two touchdowns, while Malakoff ran for 252 yards, with four backs getting at least 45 yards. Jerrion Hall led with 85 yards on just four totes with a touchdown on the ground.

Grandview is young but very talented; a lot of sophomores are playing key roles for the Zebras. Even though Malakoff has the edge in experience, Grandview gets the edge here. If anything, it’s history; these two teams have played eight times since 2018 and Grandview is 5-0 against the Tigers in the regular season, but only 1-2 against the Tigers in the playoffs. It’s just Week 2, so I’ll lean Grandview in another instant classic.

Stepp’s Pick: Grandview by 2
