REGIONAL OUTLOOK

The two-time regional champion Austin LBJ Jaguars have made the move back to Class 5A after dominating the region in 2020 and 2021, who steps up in Region IV and takes their place is the big question heading into 2022.

The district race in 13-4A Division I holds plenty of intrigue, as Marble Falls fresh off back-to-back area round playoff appearances in 5A, drops down to Class 4A. They’ll tangle with the always tricky Canyon Lake Hawks for the district crown. Expect San Antonio Davenport to be pretty solid right off the bat in their first varsity season, while the experience and play in the trenches gives Lampasas the edge over Taylor and Burnet for the last playoff spot.

Boerne enters the year as a real threat to win the region after falling to LBJ in the third round a year ago, the Greyhounds who thought they were moving to 5A this alignment have all the pieces and depth for a big run. Fredericksburg is fresh off a surprise run to the regional finals a year ago, but the Billies lose a stellar group of seniors, they should still be in solid position for the second spot. Somerset and 5A drop- down San Antonio Kennedy expect to be the final two playoff participants with Uvalde capable of playing spoiler.

15-4A Division I is unique cross-section of teams on the southern end of the San Antonio metro area stretching down to the coastal bend. Lots of new rivalries are expected to be formed in this alignment. Rockport-Fulton moves back to Division I after a ten-win season last year, can they hold off a challenge from the always tough Sandcrabs from Port Lavaca Calhoun? Pleasanton was a regional semifinalist a year ago but they had some key losses after graduation, while Beeville Jones could be a sneaky good team after making the area playoffs a year ago.

Calallen and Alice head south to the RGV in this new 16-4A Division I alignment and both will be the favorites in this new district. Alice is intriguing because of a big QB move-in that the Coyotes received in late May, is that enough to put them past Calallen who will have a new head coach for the first time in 38 years after the retirement of the legendary Phil Danaher. La Feria is a consensus pick for the third spot in the district, while Tuloso-Midway and Hidalgo are the leading candidates for the final playoff spot.
