UTEP football has hired longtime assistant Aaron Price as special teams coordinator. Price, the son of former UTEP head coach Mike Price, coached under his father for nine years.
"I want to say thank you to Coach Dimel and the UTEP staff for bringing me back home," Price said in a statement. "Wow, what an honor to be blessed with. I can't wait to rejoin my El Paso and UTEP family again."
Price served in a number of roles during his time in El Paso under his father's watch. He coached quarterbacks, wide receivers and served as offensive coordinator from 2008-12. UTEP went 23-38 over the stretch with a trip to the New Mexico Bowl in 2010.
However, Price is known best for his work on special teams. Even while serving as offensive coordinator, the former college kicker at Washington State worked with his signature position group. Over the past two years, Price coached at FCS Northern Arizona and coached both his kicker and punter to be FCS All-Americans.
Price also served as head coach of El Paso Hanks in 2017 and 2018. He took over a program that was 0-10 and led them to a 5-6 record with their first playoff apperance in six years in 2018.
"We are really pleased to have Aaron back in the program," UTEP coach Dana Dimel said. "Obviously, he has really strong roots to UTEP and El Paso. He brings plenty of experience and knowledge to our coaching staff. We think he just going to add a whole new dimension to our special teams unit."
The Miners ranked bottom-30 nationally in net punting and field goal percentage in Dimel's third season. However, well-respected kicker Gavin Baechle is back for another year of eligibility after earning Honorable Mention All-Conference USA in 2019. The Miners are seeking their first bowl game since 2014.
