Trinity at Millsaps
When: Noon Saturday at Harper Davis Field in Jackson, Miss.
The Matchup: Trinity has high hopes of winning a Southern Athletic Association title outright this spring and began its run with a comeback victory at home over rival Austin College.
The SAA is one of the most underrated conferences in the country with a ton of depth. Millsaps is one of those solid teams that met a buzzsaw last week in the form of the Hendrix offense.
Players to Watch: The Trinity offense begins with quarterback Wyatt Messex. The senior from Granger High School is a dual-threat who makes good decisions with the ball. He has only thrown 11 interceptions in 514 career attempts and tossed three touchdowns last week.
Messex has a dynamic target in junior Austin Bertness. Bertness caught nine passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns. Two of his touchdown receptions were in the fourth quarter when the Tigers scored 21 unanswered points.
Millsaps has a good receiver on its roster in senior Austin Russell. Russell and Bertness posted nearly identical numbers last week with Russell gaining 128 yards and three touchdowns on nine catches.
Key to Victory: Trinity needs to play its brand of football and avoid turnovers this week.
The Tigers have a good defensive line that was solid against the run and had an effective pass rush last week. That combination along with linebacker Michael Jewett should keep the Majors from establishing an offensive rhythm.
Prediction: Trinity 45, Millsaps 10
