Texas A&M junior punter Braden Mann was named a finalist for the 2018 Ray Guy Award on Monday, given to the college punter of the year.
Cincinnati punter James Smith and Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky are the other two finalists for the award, which will be awarded at 7 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the College Football Awards Show at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
Mann is putting together one of the finest seasons by a punter in the nation. He leads every level of college football with 50.9 yards per punt. The Aggies also rank No. 2 nationally with 43.95 net yards per punt. Out of Mann's 42 punts, 22 have traveled more than 50 yards. Seventeen punts fell within the 20-yard line, but only nine went for touchbacks.
This is Mann’s first season as the full-time punter at Texas A&M. He spent the last two seasons handling kickoffs behind Shane Tripucka. The former soccer player was previously an Under Armour All-American as a specialist at Houston Cy-Fair High School.
Mann is hoping to keep the award in the state of Texas. Former Texas punter Michael Dickson captured the award last season. Mann would also be the first non-Australian to capture the Ray Guy Award since the 2012 season.
