Texas State head football coach Everett Withers was fired on Sunday. The news was first reported by FootballScoop and the San Marcos Record. He is not expected to coach the finale against Arkansas State.

"I met with Coach Withers this morning to inform him of the university's decision," Texas State athletic director Larry Teis said. "We are thankful for his contributions to our program. His teams performed well academically and were heavily involved in the San Marcos community. But, we didn't have the same type of success on the field. We were close several times this season, but we just didn't win the games."

The news comes on the heels of a 12-7 loss to Troy on Saturday. The Bobcats mustered just 284 offensive yards turned the ball over six times against the Trojans. Texas State’s loss dropped its record to 3-8 on the year and 1-6 in Sun Belt play. Withers finishes his career at Texas State with a 7-28 overall record and 2-21 conference mark.

Withers was regarded as a strong hire for a Texas State program with just four years of FBS play under its belt in 2016. He came to San Marcos from James Madison, where he led the Dukes to an 18-7 record in two seasons. Previously, Withers was the assistant head coach at Ohio State under Urban Meyer. He also had stints with several other major programs, including North Carolina, Texas and the Tennessee Titans.

However, things never quite panned out for Withers at Texas State. He led the program to 2-10 finishes in each of the previous two seasons. Texas State won three games this season over Texas Southern, New Mexico State and Georgia State. Four other losses in 2018 were within one score.

Defensive coordinator Chris Woods will serve as interim head coach for the season finale. Texas State has not made a bowl game since moving to the FBS in 2012. The Bobcats have a combined 27-56 record in those years.
