Baylor sophomore quarterback Charlie Brewer has entered the concussion protocol, head coach Matt Rhule said on the weekly Big 12 teleconference.

Brewer appeared to suffer the injury during the worst game of his Bears career, a 58-14 loss to West Virginia on Thursday. He completed just 1-of-8 passes for 22 yards and three interceptions. Brewer had never thrown multiple interceptions in a game, and had a career 65 percent completion percentage before the game.

After Brewer’s third interception, Rhule inserted grad transfer Jalan McClendon at quarterback. He completed 16-of-21 passes for 183 yards, and added a rushing score. However, the Bears were still outscored 24-14 with McClendon in the game.

If Brewer is unavailable for Saturday’s homecoming game against Oklahoma State, McClendon is in line to get the start. The North Carolina State transfer has completed 68.9 percent of his passes for 8.9 yards per attempt, three touchdowns and a pick this season.

Brewer will be monitored and evaluated throughout the week by medical personnel. A player must go 24 hours without concussion symptoms before they are allowed to return to competition.

True freshman quarterback Gerry Bohanon could also be in line for playing time if Brewer misses any snaps. Bohanon has not appeared in a game this season. He can play in four games without burning his redshirt.

Baylor’s matchup with Oklahoma State is a pivotal one for the Bears’ bowl chances. The Cowboys are hot off a win over No. 6 Texas on Saturday. The Bears need to win two of their last four games to return to bowl eligibility after missing out a year ago.
