Baylor football didn’t look great, but still managed to scrap together an easy 37-20 victory over UTSA in San Antonio on Saturday night.
With the win, Baylor coach Matt Rhule led the Bears to a 2-0 start. Remember, the Bears mustered just one total win last season, including a 17-10 loss to the Roadrunners in Waco. Even though it was ugly, it’s still a 2-0 start and first winning streak of the Rhule era.
Here are three takeaways from the Bears’ easy win over the Roadrunners on Saturday night.
Getting their revenge
Baylor didn’t look great, but it was a marked improvement from this time last season. The Bears, obviously, lost 17-10 against UTSA during Week 2 last season. This one was never really in doubt.
The Bears scored the first two scores of the game to take an early 10-0 lead barely halfway into the first quarter. UTSA hit a pair of impressive field goals to make it 10-6, but Baylor scored two touchdowns to put it away early. It was nice to see the Bears put away an inferior opponent early and not let them stick around.
Brewer time
Last week, Jalan McClendon looked like the clear better quarterback. Against UTSA, sophomore Charlie Brewer overwhelmingly appeared to be the guy.
Brewer completed 23-of-34 passes for 328 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the easy win. McClendon struggled, only completing 3-of-6 passes for 39 yards.
This quarterback battle was too close to call all offseason, and that’s continued into the first two weeks of the season. Matt Rhule will have to make some sort of decision heading into a huge matchup against Duke on Saturday, because the Blue Devils will be able to exploit offensive inconsistency.
Running woes
Baylor really struggles on both ends when dealing with the run. JaMycal Hasty posted just seven rushing yards on 10 carries – seven! John Lovett looked more comfortable, posting nine carries for 47 yards. But still, the Bears averaged fewer than three yards a carry.
On the other end, UTSA posted just two total rushing yards against Arizona State a week ago, but B.J. Daniels had his way with the Bears. He posted 16 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown.
