TCU wide receiver KaVontae Turpin officially has his name in the Horned Frog record books.
With a huge 78-yard punt return touchdown against rival SMU with 12:34 left in the second quarter, Turpin became the all-time leader in both punt return and special teams touchdowns. He passed former wide receiver LaTarence Dunbar for the special teams record.
Turpin has been a mainstay at TCU as a returner. Heading into the game against SMU, Turpin had 1,673 kick return yards and 599 punt return yards in his career. He averages 28.4 yards per kickoff return and 12.7 yards per punt return.
His electric special teams ability has made him a recognizable name in college football. Turpin earned Freshman All-America honors as a returner, earned two honorable mention All-Big 12 picks as a returner, and was an All-Big 12 First Team member in 2017.
Turpin’s return came at a good time. TCU trailed SMU 9-0 heading into the second quarter after a slow start to the game. However, a fumble recovery by Jaelen Austin and Turpin’s return helped launch the Horned Frogs to a 14-9 lead with 8:13 left in the second quarter.
