Houston football is set to face off against former coach Kevin Sumlin and the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday morning in Houston.

The game features two programs hoping to rebound after a slow start in Week 1. Houston went down 27-17 to Rice, but ultimately managed to fight its way back. The Wildcats weren’t as lucky, giving up an embarrassing loss to BYU.

However, there’s some high-end talent on both teams that have a chance to post game-breaking numbers. Whichever set of skill players plays best will likely decide the game.

Here are some things to keep an eye on in the Week 2 matchup.

Houston vs. Arizona preview

Homecoming

Saturday marks the return of former Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, who is coaching Arizona for his first game at the University of Houston since taking the Texas A&M job in 2011. Sumlin coached a wildly successful period in Houston history, and helped produce FBS all-time leading passer Case Keenum.

A year after getting the boot from Texas A&M, Sumlin leads the Arizona Wildcats and highly-touted quarterback Khalil Tate. It hasn’t been a smooth start. The Wildcats lost 28-23 to BYU in the opener. Sumlin inexplicably kept Tate in the pocket instead of utilizing his dual-threat abilities. With a terrible loss on the schedule, expect Sumlin to re-evaluate that decision.

Dominant start

Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver is up to his old tricks again. The junior – again, playing at defensive tackle – led the Cougars last weekend with 13 tackles. He also added 3.5 tackles for loss and two quarterback hurries against a Rice team that showed some salty offensive ability.

Oliver’s presence also helped open gaps for defensive line transfer Isaiah Chambers, a former TCU player. He flashed some big-time ability, but Oliver’s attention helped make it happen. He’s the most important overall player in Texas, and the best overall player in America.

Future Heisman battle

It’s not common to see two Heisman Trophy contenders in the same game. It’s pretty dang rare to see them face off against each other on every play. But luckily, Ed Oliver and Khalil Tate will line up against against each other on every single Arizona offensive play on Saturday.

Granted, Tate’s Heisman hopes may be crushed after losing to BYU last week. But he will still cause significant issues for the UH line. As a sophomore, he rushed for 1,411 yards and 12 touchdowns on a cool 9.2 yards per carry. Oliver is the best run-stopper in America, but the entire line will have to hold the edge if the Houston defense wants to contain this talent.
