EL PASO -- It was a rough night to say the least for the UTEP Miners, who fell to FCS-affiliate Northern Arizona 30-10 at home on Saturday night.

The Miners now are riding a 13-game losing streak that poured over from last season and will hope to bounce back next week on the road against UNLV. UTEP hasn't won a game since Nov. 26, 2016.

Here are the three plays that changed the course of the game:

Opening Drive

In the first four minutes of the game, UTEP saw just where they stood as an offensive unit. Head coach Dana Dimel decided to go with Ryan Metz as the starting gunslinger, but on his first pass of the 2018 season, he threw an interception. The costly turnover set up a seven-play, 49-yard touchdown drive for Northern Arizona.

On the opening drive for the Lumberjacks, quarterback Case Cookus looked sharp, completing four consecutive passes. The drive was capped off by a Cory Young one-yard rushing touchdown.

The opening turnover and points made for a drastic start by the Miners. They would turn the ball over again on the next drive, but this time on a fumble by fullback Winston Dimel, which, again, resulted in points for Northern Arizona.

Wadley Scores First UTEP Points

On the Miners’ third drive, Kai Locksley replaced Metz as quarterback in efforts to cook something up offensively. Locksley showed what he could do on the ground on the first couple of drives, but couldn’t muster anything through his first three drives for the Miners.

On his fourth drive, Locksley picked up momentum and came up with a four-play, 77-yard drive ending in a 32-yard touchdown run by Quadriaz Wadley.

Locksley picked up more momentum on the next drive and compiled an 11-play, 81-yard drive that nearly finished in a touchdown. Unfortunately, there was just four seconds left on the clock, so the Miners had to settle for a field goal.

The Turnover That Ruined the Game

After a Cookus interception stolen by UTEP defensive back Kalon Beverly, the Miners offense had about 60-yards to march back into the game at any effort for a comeback. The score was 23-10 in the Lumberjacks favor, but the Miners were still in reach with time still on their side. A touchdown would have helped salvage a bit of their deficit and help gain some momentum for the team.

As Locksley was starting to get something going, he threw a deep ball that was picked off by Northern Arizona and returned all the way to the Miners’ 8-yard line. On the very next play, Northern Arizona scored on an eight-yard run by Joe Logan to extend the lead 30-10.

Neither team would score from then on, and the Miners ultimately fell 30-10 to Northern Arizona and start their 2018 season 0-1, pushing the losing streak to 13 games.
