HOUSTON -- Texas Tech quarterback McLane Carter carter went out with an apparently ankle injury in the first quarter against Ole Miss. Former Grapevine standout Alan Bowman took over the position.

Carter got tangled up on a tackle and appeared to get his ankle caught under a defender. He had 49 yards passing and 13 yards rushing before going out.

Texas Tech's training staff has described the injury as an "ankle" injury, but is still running tests.

Carter narrowly won the starting job after a tight 3-man quarterback competition in Lubbock between Carter, Bowman and sophomore Jett Duffey. A starter was not named before the opener at NRG Stadium. All three were listed as potential starters on the pregame depth chart.

It was somewhat of a surprise to see Bowman enter the game instead of Duffey. Duffey, a third-year sophomore, won Mr. Texas Football as a senior in 2015. However, Bowman is no slouch. He threw for 11,393 yards and 119 touchdowns during a standout career at Grapevine High School.

Carter was the only quarterback with any game experience. He completed 16-of-37 passes against Texas before getting benched for Nic Shimonek last season.

Texas Tech trails Ole Miss 24-10 with 11:07 left in the second quarterback of the Advocare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium.
