Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is entering a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction and will take an indefinite leave of absence from the football program, the school announced on Monday. He’s under NCAA investigation after the discovery of thousands of bets via a gambling app.

“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said in an email. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”

Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech from Cincinnati in the offseason for reportedly over $5 million dollars. He was expected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the Big 12 and lead the Red Raiders back to the Big 12 Championship and a spot in the College Football Playoff.

The potential loss of Sorsby is extra concerning for Texas Tech because backup quarterback Will Hammond is recovering from injury and isn’t expected to be 100 percent healthy for fall camp. Tulsa transfer Kirk Francis has experience and would likely be the Week 1 starter if Sorsby and Hammond are not available.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reports that Sorsby bet on games as a freshman at Indiana.
