Cypress Ranch 2027 QB Braden Baker (6’5, 185) never lacked belief in his skills, but when skepticism followed early offers from Baylor, Houston, San Diego State, Louisiana Tech and UTSA, he turned it into motivation.
“I took the criticism from last year—people saying I didn’t deserve those offers—and I came into the season with a chip on my shoulder,” said Baker, who led the Mustangs on a playoff run that included an overall 10-3 record and an Area Championship.
“I think I proved a lot of people wrong.”
As a junior, Baker threw for 2,806 yards, scored 35 total touchdowns, and tossed just one interception to earn 16-6A District MVP honors.
“I think the culture really changed when Coach Blaylock and his staff came in,” Baker said. “Everything has been completely different since then, and I’ve had a blast playing football here.”
From an evaluation standpoint, Baker fits the modern QB mold. He offers size and a strong frame with room to add weight.
“I’d say my skill set is more of a pocket passer, but I can definitely use my legs and beat defenses that way, too,” Baker said. “I feel like that balance really helps me.”
Cy-Ranch Head Coach William Blaylock leaned in when assessing Baker’s ceiling.
“He’s the best pure quarterback I’ve ever coached,” Blaylock said. “I’ve had great athletes and great quarterbacks. But Baker is different.”
“I was around Andrew Luck when he was in high school, and I get the same vibe from Braden. He has that ‘it’ factor.”
Blaylock believes Baker’s trajectory is rising.
“Everybody said they wanted to see a full body of work," Blaylock said. "Well, 3,000 yards, 35 touchdowns, one turnover in 13 games, that’s a pretty good body of work.”

“I grew as a person, as a leader,” Baker added.
Baker is the younger brother of Louisiana Tech quarterback Blake Baker, so he has seen the amount of work it takes to succeed at the next level
When asked about quarterbacks he studies, Baker pointed out a familiar name.
“NFL-wise, I look up to Josh Allen,” Baker said. “He was doubted… and he just grinded his way to the NFL.”
In recruiting, Houston and Baylor remain the most consistent in their communication. His relationship with Houston offensive coordinator Shawn Bell stands out.
“It really feels like a friendship,” Baker said. “He comes around a lot… I love going over to Houston.”
Baker has been named as a 2027 DCTX three-star.
