Kris McCullough is leaving UT Permian Basin to become the head coach at FCS program Gardner-Webb, sources confirmed to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. McCullough, 30, first became a head coach at 26 years old when he took over East Central in 2022. He was named the head coach at UTPB a year later and has led the Falcons to two Division II playoff appearances and one Lone Star Conference title.
McCullough was only the second coach in the history of UTPB football, which began fielding a team in 2016. He led the Falcons to their first playoff trip, first conference title, and first playoff win. He leaves Odessa with a 28-10 record and two double-digit win seasons in three years in charge. He’s 37-13 overall in four seasons as a collegiate head coach.
UTPB should be an attractive job in the Division II ranks because of the success the Falcons achieved during McCullough’s tenure. They won 11 games this year and reached the DII quarterfinals.
