ARLINGTON, Texas — Here’s some news and notes from the Friday action at the UIL State Football Championships:

Stephenville 10, Kilgore 0

  • Stephenville improves to 7-0 in UIL State Football championship games with the victory, Sterling Doty’s second state title.
  • Dominant defensive effort from Stephenville holding Kilgore to xxx yards and forcing four turnovers.
  • First time Kilgore has been shutout since Nov 14, 2019 when they lost to Crandall 14-0 in the bi-district playoffs.
  • This was the lowest scoring UIL State Football state championship game since 1991 when Groesbeck beat Burnet 7-0 in the 3A state championship game.
  • Announced attendance of 18,463 was the largest crowd for a 4A-Division I title game since 2019.

Carthage 49, West Orange-Stark 21

  • Scott Surratt improves his incredible UIL State record to 11-0, no other head coach has coached in eleven title games much less win that number of the state titles.
  • RB KJ Edwards earned offensive MVP honors with 153 rushing yards and two scores, QB Jett Surratt threw for 232 yards and three scores, the duo has been a mainstay for the Bulldogs the last three seasons and they wrap their career with a 44-2 record.
  • If not for an overtime loss in the 2023 regional semifinals there’s a strong chance Carthage wins four titles in a row as they won the state title in 2022, 2024 and 2025.
  • Carthage led 49-0 in the fourth quarter before WOS tallied three late scores.
  • West Orange-Stark could start the season ranked very high in 4A-Division II in 2026 as the Mustangs across the board had a very young roster, while Carthage graduates a record-breaking senior group.

Smithson Valley 28, Frisco Lone Star 6

  • After falling in the state title game in his first four appearances, Larry Hill, the dean of San Antonio area coaches now has back-to-back state titles.
  • Smithson Valley’s defense allowed just nine yards of offense in the third quarter and held Lone Star to just 230 yards on the night, with 78 yards coming on the final drive of the game when Lone Star got their lone score.
  • Frisco Lone Star was averaging 50.6 points per game in the playoffs heading into the state title game and they were held scoreless until Lone Star’s touchdown with under a minute left.
  • Frisco Lone Star had seven fumbles on the night, losing two.
  • SMU signee DE Hudson Woods had two sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups.

Thus far, attendance at the state title games has exceeded the 2024 attendance totals with an over 25% increase from a year ago, with the biggest crowd being the Smithson Valley-Frisco Lone Star game which had an announced attendance of 21,493.
