It's the seventh week of the 2023 Texas high school football season, with 600+ games scattered across the state. There are favorites...but who could spring the upset?
Using DCTF's computer projections, DCTF managing editor Greg Tepper identifies three teams that could pull the upset in Week 7.
Laredo United (3-2) at Laredo United South (1-4)
Laredo United South projected to win by 4
This rivalry matchup down in The Gateway City — a District 30-6A opener for both teams — is very difficult to figure. On one hand, United South is much better than its unsightly 1-4 record may indicate: its four losses are to teams with a combined 19-1 record, and it boasts an impressive win at Corpus Christi Flour Bluff. On the other hand, United has undoubtedly been more consistent and will boast the best player on the field in quaterback Atzel Chavez Jr., who accounted for nearly 250 yards and four touchdowns in the Longhorns’ win over South last season. Furthermore, if you’re a believer in the transitive property, the edge has to go to United — the Longhorns beat handed Harlingen its lone loss of the year on a neutral site the last time we saw them, while South fell at the hands of the Cardinals. The computer projections obviously still like South, but United might be the pick here.
China Spring (4-2) at Alvarado (5-1)
China Spring projected to win by 8
The wild and wooly District 5-4A Division I kicks off this week, and China Spring enters as the deserved favorite; that’s what you get when you’re a two-time defending state champion. But are they walking into a trap in Alvarado? The Indians are quietly 5-1, and the offense has been wildly impressive as junior quarterback Cardea Collier has emerged as one of the state’s most fun players to watch. Both of China Spring’s losses are respectable (even if the Melissa game got a little ugly), but there are real concerns about the Cougars’ defense, allowing 35 points per game — double what they allowed in last year’s title run. And lest we forget what a less-powerful Alvarado team did to a defending state champ last year, stunning Stephenville in a wild 50-49 affair. China Spring should win; but don’t be surprised if the Indians shock the state again.
Liberty Hill (3-3) at San Antonio Veterans Memorial (3-2)
Liberty Hill projected to win by 2
Is there a more bizarre district than 13-5A Division II? Two weeks in and it’s already chaos, with Kerrville Tivy upending Liberty Hill in the district opener…only to fall to Bastrop the very next week. Week 7 will go a long way towards sorting things out here, and it’s an especially crucial round for Liberty Hill, whose bouts of offensive inconsistency have them sitting at 3-3 — already more losses than they had all last season. San Antonio Veterans Memorial is 3-2 on paper but 4-1 on the field, having forfeited its season opening win over Harlandale due to an ineligible player, and their offense has hit another gear recently behind the running combo of quarterback Clinton Dixon and running back Taveyon Warren, who are combining to average more than 220 yards rushing per game. Which Liberty Hill offense shows up? We know the talent is there with guys like Ben Carter and Noah Long, but if they come out flat again, Veterans Memorial is good enough to send them to a losing record, especially at home.
