Current Oregon State assistant AJ Steward is set to be named new running back coach and assistant head coach, sources confirm to DCTF. The vacancy was recreated when Justin Johnson left for the wide receiver job at Texas Tech. The Bears went 6-6 in 2022 following a Big 12 championship season in 2021.

Steward arrives in Baylor after two years spent at Oregon State. Beavers running back B.J. Baylor led the Pac-12 in rushing in 2021, totaling 1,337 yards. The unit averaged a program-record 5.3 yards a rush that season. Steward was the running back coach at Arizona in 2020 and at BYU in 2018 and 2019. He played tight end at Kansas and has experience in Texas from time as an assistant at Rice.
