The 2022 Texas High School Football season concluded on Saturday with a magical run for the DFW area, specifically the Southern sector of Dallas County as DeSoto and Duncanville joined South Oak Cliff who won the state title Friday night as champions. Aledo, from west of Fort Worth took home the 5A-Division I title as well giving DFW a sweep of state title in the state’s four largest classifications.
Aledo, the most dominant TXHSFB program of the last twenty years put on their most emphatic display of dominance in a state title game in school history as the Bearcats absolutely demolished College Station 52-14 to win the 5A-Division I state championship, their eleventh in school history, a UIL record. Aledo WR Jalen Pope set a UIL 5A receiving record in the title game with eight catches for 223 yards and three touchdowns, while QB Hauss Hejny finished the afternoon with 321 yards of total offense, two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. HC Tim Buchanan earned his eighth state championship as a head coach at Aledo.
DeSoto in emphatic fashion won their second state title in school history in the 6A-Division II state championship game as the Eagles rolled past Austin Vandegrift 42-17, giving head coach Claude Mathis his first state title as a head coach. Leading just 21-17 halfway through the third quarter, the Eagles scored the game’s final 21-points in a span of less than eight minutes to blow the game open. Sophomore RB Deondrae “Tiger” Riden earned offensive MVP honors rushing for 187 yards and three touchdowns, while the Eagles two Texas commits had big nights. ATH Tre Wisner had 135 yards and two receiving touchdowns along with 75 yards on the ground. WR Johntay Cook, also a Texas commit had 103 receiving yards and a touchdown. DeSoto, who won the Texas State 7-on-7 title in June becomes the sixth team to win a Texas State 7-on-7 crown and UIL football crown in the same year, joining Tyler Lee (2004), Celina (2000 & 2007), Lake Travis (2010) and Melissa (2011).
In the night cap to close out the season, Duncanville delivered legendary head coach Reginald Samples his first state championship as a head coach with a 28-21 win over Galena Park North Shore in a classic heavyweight bout in front of over 40,000 fans. The win for Duncanville was their first in four tries against North Shore with each loss coming with some sort of heartbreak, this time despite some nervy moments late there was only joy for the Panthers as on 4th and 4 the defense held North Shore QB David Amador a yard short of a first down as the Mustangs were driving for a potential game tying (or game winning score) as NSHS had moved to the Duncanville 15-yard line. RB Caden Durham was the offensive star for Duncanville rushing for 104 yards and three touchdowns on 25 tough carries.
The overall average attendance for the ten UIL eleven-man state title games was 20,473 which was the lowest average attendance since 2017, with the Duncanville-North Shore game on Saturday night featuring the largest crowd.
